Maybo recently worked with a SEND school that supports secondary-aged children and young people with moderate to complex needs. The school was concerned by a number of incidents and risk behaviours, including some resulting in injuries. Maybo was introduced to further enhance staff skills with positive strategies for reducing and responding to behaviours of concern.

The training programme focused on understanding behaviour, recognising and addressing needs, and employing de-escalation skills alongside safer approaches for heightened situations.

    Our approach

Maybo’s training programme focused on three key areas:

    • Positive Approaches to Behaviour: tailored strategies to effectively engage and support pupils.
    • Safer De-escalation: tools to prevent and manage escalation in behaviour through low arousal approaches.
    • Personal Safety, Guiding and Re-Direction: practical skills to ensure staff and pupil safety in heightened situations.

The training was delivered to 24 staff members who were identified based on incident data. We combined eLearning with classroom sessions to meet the school’s needs. On average, participants rated the course a 3.87 out of 4, with most staff reporting significant benefits across multiple areas.

    Post-training outcomes:

After the training was delivered, the school evaluated the extent to which staff had implemented the training in practice and whether it had been beneficial. This revealed:

    Additional stats

    • 60.9% have implemented guiding skills learned during the sessions.
    • 87% reported greater confidence in managing challenging behaviours.

    Incident data

In the eight weeks following the training (compared to eight weeks prior), reported incidents dropped from 20 to six, with injuries decreasing from 11 to just one.

This notable reduction highlights the influence of Maybo training, especially when a school actively supports the transition to practice. This collaborative effort cultivates a culture of confidence and care, thereby promoting a safer environment for both staff and pupils.
